Metropolis Scene Analysis

Scene from 1:03.33 – 1:06.26

This scene uses contrast of light and dark and varying speeds and volumes of sound in order to portray a rather suspenseful and emotive effect. A woman can be seen walking through a dark hall or cave with only a candle as a source of light. When she turns a corner a shadow appears and the music speeds up creating and displaying the emotion of fear. She paces away as the music increases in sound, almost as if it corresponds to her suspected loud and quickening heart rate. When she thinks she is in the clear the music softens, but is quickly altered again when a hand reaches out smothering her light source. The transition of light from her hand to that of the mystery figure also causes a transition in the mood. When the woman held the light source all seemed okay and she was oblivious to all of the remnants of skeletons and bones in the cave. On the other hand, when the man stole her light source, a spotlight began to shine on all the terrifying things. This use of light, in collaboration with the music, created an even more horrific scene. The music creates an even greater effect on the viewers perception than it may seem. The women’s act of hovering close to the walls also creates an effect as though the walls were caving in and she had no where to escape to, shortening the distance between her and the man. The spotlight shining on her makes her the center of attention, placing all focus on her quivering body and frightened facial reactions. The light directs the eye to her, preventing it from wandering elsewhere during the scene and taking away from the emotion. Her hand motions also appear to display the same effect as spiders crawling up a person’s body which evokes a very unsettling feeling. It is almost as if every time the light hits her or stops on her it suffocates her and holds her in place before releasing her. She then runs frantically again before being caught by the light over and over. Her struggle to escape is portrayed by the escalating music once again. No sound effects besides the music are needed to tell that she is in a struggle. By cornering herself into the wall, this symbolizes vulnerability. The scene ends with a final fade to black and a silence of the music, recognizing her ultimate defeat.
